Acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians

We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits and their legacy. The foundations laid by these ancestors give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations, both First Nations and non-First Nations peoples, towards creating a better Queensland.

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

To support and raise awareness of patrons with a non-visible disability, QPAC is a proud member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program.

Globally 1 in 7 people live with a disability, and while some of those disabilities are visible, there are also many living with a non-visible condition or a combination of both. They can be cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program is a globally recognised initiative that ‘makes the invisible visible’ by encouraging those with a hidden disability to wear a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard, pin or other merchandise to let people know they may need extra time, understanding or assistance in various situations.

Wearing a Sunflower is voluntary. By choosing to wear a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, you can signal to our trained staff that you may need assistance or a little extra time during your visit.

FAQs

Do I need to explain why I am wearing the Sunflower lanyard to get support?

No, you don't need to explain why you are wearing the Sunflower lanyard.

The Sunflower symbol doesn’t focus on the invisible, it triggers a simple question ‘How can I help you?’ to focus on the support or understanding you need. Simply by wearing the Sunflower, you’re letting QPAC staff know that you might need extra help, understanding, or just more time.

Do I have to share what my disability is to justify the support I need?

There is no qualifying list of invisible disabilities - you simply choose to wear the Sunflower to indicate that you may need additional support, help or a little more time.
